[VIDEO] Spectrum: Uncovering Functional Illiteracy In Cleveland

Lindsay Oliver, from Spectrum News Ohio, recently spent a morning at Seeds East, learning about adult functional illiteracy rates in Cleveland.

“Functionally illiterate means they are still able to parent, work, and function, but they don’t really have the reading, writing and math skills to prosper in our society. That means they may struggle to read a bus schedule and notes from their child’s school, or they may struggle to make proper change. From division to reading and writing prep, students in the Seeds classroom are finally getting the education they never got as a kid for a variety of reasons,” the report explains. She interviewed a variety of staff members, tutors, students, and even recent graduates to ensure her readers and viewers fully understood the problem.
