Cleveland Stories Writing Workshops

In partnership with Literary Cleveland and Neighborhood Connections

FREE! No writing experience necessary. Light refreshments included.

A place-based writing program for members of Mt. Pleasant and surrounding neighborhoods on Cleveland’s east side. Participants will have an opportunity to write their stories, learn about their neighborhood, and share with their neighbors. Selected pieces will be published and presented at a final reading and celebration.

At this lively, interactive forum, Susan Hall, Director of Community Relations at Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS), will give a talk about Mt. Pleasant history, and Charlotte Morgan, a Glenville-based writer and first-year writing instructor at Cleveland State University, will discuss telling personal stories grounded in place. Light refreshments provided.

This event is free but registration is required. 

Writing Stories from Real Life | Tuesdays in June @Seeds East

Session I: Writing Stories from Real Life

With Charlotte Morgan. Participants will explore their personal stories through essays and poetry. Topics covered will include:

  • How to get started
  • Organizing your ideas
  • Conducting basic research and interviews
  • Finding the heart of your story
  • Tips to polish your writing

Participants will have a chance to share stories, and receive helpful, constructive feedback from the group.

Have you ever wanted to interview someone about their story? Speak with a relative about what the neighborhood was like before you lived there? Tell the story of a mentor or a community leader? This workshop will explore oral history and interview techniques, such as:

  • How to conduct an interview
  • How to develop a list of questions
  • Write a profile that captures an individual’s story and impact

At the end of the session, participants will have at least one interview and written a 500 to 1,000-word profile.

Tell the story of your neighborhood. What is challenging it? What gives you hope about where you live? What have you learned that others might not know?Participants will complete at least one 500 to 1,000-word piece focused on their community.
