Volunteer Tutors Wanted: Summer Enrollment Rises at Seeds of Literacy
June 21, 2010
Cleveland, Ohio, June 21, 2010—- Enrollment in summer class sessions is soaring at Seeds of Literacy, a nonprofit organization offering free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation. Seeds is one of the few adult literacy programs in Cuyahoga County to offer class sessions during the summer months. All classes are held at the Resource Center, 3104 West 25th Street, 3rd Floor (corner of West 25th and Clark Avenue). The facility is ADA accessible and on major RTA lines.
“We usually see an increase in students each summer,“ says Bonnie Entler, Executive Director of Seeds of Literacy. “But this year we are seeing more students than anticipated.“ Seeds offers three class sessions Monday through Thursday: 9 am - 11 am, 1 pm -3 pm, and 6pm - 8 pm. All sessions feature tutors who work with students individually on math, science, social studies, and language arts. Computer instruction and career exploration are also included in the curriculum.
Additional tutors are needed. Tutors help adult students meet personal educational goals, offer encouragement and support, review student work, and keep records of student progress. All tutors are required to attend one tutor training session; no teaching experience is necessary. More than half of the Seeds of Literacy tutors have been volunteering for more than 5 years.
