School’s Out—But Not For Seeds of Literacy
June 21, 2009
As summer vacation gets into full swing for many students, those at Seeds of Literacy are hard at work. Seeds of Literacy, providing free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County, meets the needs of its students by offering a year-round schedule of class sessions.
“Our students need flexibility,” states Bonnie Entler, Executive Director of Seeds of Literacy. “We encourage their commitment to improve their education by being open all year, instead of only on a typical nine-month academic calendar.” Seeds of Literacy holds three class sessions daily, Monday through Thursday, from 9 am to 11 am, 1 pm to 3 pm, and 6 pm to 8 pm. All classes are held at the Resource Center, 3104 West 25th Street, 3rd Floor (corner of West 25th and Clark Avenue). The facility is ADA accessible and on major RTA lines.
Students rely on the range of class sessions. Seeds student Pamela Mc Coy comments, “If I miss the morning session, I make sure to attend the afternoon session. I look at my situation like a puzzle and when I miss a day, I feel as though I am missing a piece.”
Since January, student enrollment has increased by 30% each week. Over 850 students are active at Seeds, with the generous assistance of about 200 volunteer tutors. Seeds has retention and graduation rates that are twice the national average, and is the only adult literacy organization with national accreditation in Cuyahoga County.
Student, volunteer, and donation opportunities are all available. For more information, visit http://www.seedsofliteracy.org or call 216.661.7950.
Seeds of Literacy is a nonprofit, 501(C)3 organization providing personalized education that empowers adults to succeed in their communities.
