Marge Stack Wins National Tutor of the Year Award
October 7, 2008
Marge Stack, a resident of Brunswick Hills, Ohio and longtime volunteer tutor for Seeds of Literacy, has been selected as the 2008 Tutor of the Year by ProLiteracy America and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Seeds of Literacy provides basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County, and is an educational ministry initiated by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
This award honors an outstanding commitment to literacy exhibited by a selfless dedication to tutoring others. Mrs. Stack attended the award ceremony at the ProLiteracy Worldwide Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 3, 2008.
“One thousand, nine hundred and thirty-five hours and counting,” says Bonnie Entler, Executive Director of Seeds of Literacy. “This is the minimum amount of time that Marge Stack has donated to individuals in our program over the last ten years. She has touched an enormous number of lives through her education and compassion, and she has been a loyal supporter of our program and its mission.” In addition to her hours spent tutoring twice a week, Mrs. Stack assists with administrative and event-related tasks on a regular basis.
Mrs. Stack began volunteering for Seeds of Literacy after retiring in 1997. As one of the early tutors in the program, she has seen the first GED class of seventeen graduates grow to a graduating class of sixty in 2008. When speaking about her involvement with Seeds of Literacy, Mrs. Stack doesn’t mince words. “If you want to do something to help people, come and be a tutor. Anybody can do it.”
