Volunteer Tutor Training

Save the Date: Saturday, April 25th, 2015 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Seeds of Literacy has a great need for volunteer tutors to help with free GED preparation and adult education in Cleveland!

Every day you use your literacy skills to figure out sales prices, check your email, make dinner from a recipe, handle your money, and follow instructions on a medicine bottle. But what if you didn’t have the basic reading and math skills required to navigate these daily tasks?

The staggering truth is that 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and you can help them improve their lives by volunteering with Seeds of Literacy as an adult literacy tutor. As the only adult education program in Cuyahoga County that registers new students every week, we always have a need for new and enthusiastic tutors.

The donation of your time, skills, and patience as a tutor can make the crucial difference to an adult learner right in our community. Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning.

To register, contact Alexandria Marshall at or 216.661.7950.

We have two locations to serve our community:

East Side

(corner of Kinsman & E. 139th Street)

East Side Tutor Training

Save the Date: June 19th, 2015 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Seeds of Literacy has an urgent need for GED prep and adult literacy tutors for our east side location on Kinsman Road in Cleveland.

A shocking 97% of residents in the Kinsman neighborhood are functionally illiterate, but the donation of your time, skills, and patience as a volunteer tutor can make the crucial difference to an adult learner right in our community!

Our Kinsman site opened last fall and is thriving with students, but we need more enthusiastic tutors to provide them with the encouragement, support, and one-to-one tutoring to help them reach their goals. As the only area GED program that remains open throughout the summer and offers new student registration every week, we always have an influx of new students working to improve their lives through improved literacy.

We ask that tutors can commit to attending one class session per week for one year, but our class schedule is flexible and tutors can attend whichever session is most convenient for them in a given week. Classes at our Kinsman site are held Monday-Thursday from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

To register for the training or to learn more about volunteering, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Alexandria Marshall at or 216.661.7950 x10.
